“Whoever wishes to foresee the future must consult the past; for human events ever resemble those of preceding times. This arises from the fact that they are produced by men who ever have been, and ever shall be, animated by the same passions, and thus they necessarily have the same results. “
Sometimes things happen in life at such coincidental times that it’s uncanny. Take the last week, for example. A week ago, our family watched a movie called Bonhoeffer. It is the story of a man named Dietrich Bonhoeffer, one of the few men to stand up against Adolph Hitler in Nazi Germany. He was hanged for his resistance less than one month before the end of World War II.
Then, less than one week later, we had the opportunity to see Barrack Obama become the 44th president of the United States of America.
“What’s so coincidental about that?” you may ask. Well, towards the beginning of Bonhoeffer, there’s a scene where Nazi soldiers walk into a church and force all the congregants as well as Pastor Bonhoeffer to take the Hitler oath. Then, less than a week later, I witnessed a video clip featuring several prominent celebrities taking the “Presidential Pledge”. The text of the two pledges is given below.
“I swear: I will be faithful and obedient to Adolf Hitler, Führer of the German Reich and people, to observe the law, and to conscientiously fulfill my official duties, so help me God.”
“I pledge: to be a servant to our president, and all mankind.”
(You can watch the video of the “Obama Pledge” here: http://www.etonline.com/news/2009/01/69818/index.html )
Now, of course, there are several differences between the Obama oath and the Hitler oath. First and most important is the fact that no one was forced to take the Obama oath; they did it out of their love, support and adoration of him. However, keep in mind that a handful of prominent people taking an oath out of free will is only a vote and a signature away from making the oath mandatory by law.
Another difference is the mostly irrelevant fact that the Obama oath is surrounded by multiple layers of cotton-candy rhetoric, inspiring music, and make-you-feel-good resolutions. But then again, Hitler didn’t become a popular politician by shoving his ideas down people’s throats either. Hitler’s ideas were cotton-candy-coated too… in the beginning.
Does this mean I think Obama is going to seize control of the entire government and start killing off an entire race of people? Well, honestly, I don’t know. I certainly hope not. I’m hopeful that he still has too much opposition to get that far. And although the American people have already demonstrated their collective stupidity by electing the man, I have a hard time believing that we are so stupid as to accept anything so radical. Then again, I’m sure that’s what the Germans thought when Hitler rose to power.
Regardless of what he actually plans to do, Obama certainly is set up perfectly to take total control of the government, just as Hitler did. Obama, like Hitler, gained his popularity in a time of economic crisis. Like Hitler, he came into a position of power because of his promises to bring economic change and prosperity. Like Hitler, he garnered support by using inspiring rhetoric and propaganda. And like Hitler, Obama’s party now has control of the legislative and executive branches of government.
So again, I ask myself: is Obama going to do to the United States what Hitler did to Germany? I honestly don’t know. I don’t think it’s possible to accurately predict what’s going to happen in the future at this point in time. So since we cannot know, we must prepare for the worst. We cannot change the past; Obama is president, and there’s nothing we can do about it. All we can do now is be watchful, be on the alert, keep our guards up, stand up for what we believe in, and hope that humanity is wise enough to learn from its mistakes.
“First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was neither, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out. And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me.”
